Bran Castle is one of the man touristic attraction in Romania. Transylvania is full of fortified castles and churches , so in that respect this castle is more of tourist trap.
Bran castle was built somewhere between 1200 – 1300. It was used by different kingdoms In 15th century anglo-saxons based in Brasov got the possession of the castle when Hungarian kings failed to repay their loans. From 1920 it became royal residence of Romania.
It became the favorite home and retreat of Queen Marie, who ordered its extensive renovation conducted by the Czech architect Karel Zdenฤk Lรญman. The castle was inherited by her daughterย Princess Ileanaย who ran a hospital there in World War II: it was later seized by theย communist regimeย with the expulsion of the royal family in 1948.
Though the castle is famous to the the outside world as home of Dracula , Dracula was just the the imagination of Bram Stoker. He never visited Romania in his life. Vlad the impaler was a character from Romanian history and was actually considered like Robinhood in local folklore. He had never visited Bran castle.
How did I do it: Frequent bus (every 30 mins) toย Mรณca Bran available from main Bus station . One way bus ticket is 7 Lei.
